In a significant step toward strengthening evidence-based medical education, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Medical Commission (NMC) have jointly announced the "Research for Strengthening and Enhancing Quality of Medical Education – 2026" funding initiative. The programme aims to encourage high-quality research that can improve teaching, learning, assessment, and competency development across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral medical education in India.
The initiative comes at a time when India's medical education system is undergoing rapid transformation through the implementation of Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME). While CBME has introduced a more learner-centered approach, the ICMR–NMC initiative recognizes the need for robust educational research to evaluate innovative teaching methods, digital technologies, and strategies that enhance learning outcomes and prepare future healthcare professionals.
The call is open to medical colleges and medical institutions across India. Eligible Principal Investigators must be regular faculty members with relevant medical qualifications and experience in medical education research. Projects selected under the scheme may receive funding for up to three years under the Small Grant (Anveshan) category or four years under the Intermediate Grant (Nishayak Anveshan) category.
Research proposals should focus on developing and evaluating innovative approaches that strengthen medical education. Areas of interest include digital learning technologies, competency development, modern teaching-learning strategies, assessment innovations, and methods that improve the quality of education for medical students and trainees.
Applications must be submitted online through the ICMR Extramural Project Management System (e-PMS). The application process opened on 25 June 2026, and the deadline for proposal submission is 21 August 2026 (5:00 PM IST).
